For those seeking a quieter, more historical outing, to the east of the Aude valley is Carcassonne, one of the wonders of Medieval architecture with its splendid cite and castle, and fantastic panoramic views.
More magnificent castles are to be found, particularly at Queribus and Peyrepertuse, two stunning feats of engineering, these castles seeminly defy gravity, on top of mountain peaks.
Visitors can also discover Andorra and Spain, with the Spanish boarder being a mear 40 minutes drive away.
The area is in the southern most corner of France and enjoys one of the mildest climates, making it ideal for out of season visits.
